The Theology of God's Pain

There is a book by theologian Yoshizo Kitamori called "The Theology of God's Pain."

As the title suggests, the one point is that God is in pain.

This is a book that requires quiet, deep observation.

What Kitamori was trying to say was,

It's not about equating human emotions with those of God.

The one who gives life,

The severance from that life

The pain of taking on that burden within yourself.

It's neither sadness, nor anger, nor grief.

The pain of embracing the very separation.

Not pain meant to blame others,

The pain of holding someone back.

The cross is,

Not a symbol of punishment,

To overcome the divide

The path that God has chosen within Himself.

What Kitamori was looking at was,

The fact that God is in pain,

Not feelings of love,

A testament to the very sharing of life.

That's the point.

God is not one who avoids pain,

Through pain

Those who restore life.

When you touch upon this perspective,

The phrase "God is in pain"

It sinks quietly and deeply.

A quiet table with a mug and a notebook in the morning light.
静かな朝に、心がひらく。
