Song of Songs — Following the Movement of the Subject
Before moving on to Song of Songs 1:11, let’s take a little idle time.
When I first began walking through the Song of Songs, I decided on one direction:
“Let’s follow the grammatical persons.”
Who is speaking?Who is being spoken to?
Is it “I”?“You”?“We”?
Just as I promised, I’ve been following these shifts in person as I’ve walked this far.
Meanwhile, in our morning live sessions, I’ve been sharing observations from Genesis 3.
And there, I keep being confronted by the movement of the subject.
Who speaks?Who acts?Who is being spoken to?
Where does the subject change?
When the subject moves, the scenery of the text moves with it...
So perhaps, in the Song of Songs too, instead of following only the grammatical persons, I could broaden my perspective a little and walk with this question:
“What if I follow the movement of the subject?”
Who is speaking?Who is being spoken to?Is it singular or plural?
Where does the subject change?
All the way through chapter 8...
I’m going to follow the movement of the subject.
A walking path with no guarantee of an answer...
The more I read, the more the answers seem to remain just out of reach.
What a mysterious scroll...
No wonder scholars say the Song of Songs is difficult.
So, for now,
I’ll keep walking through this world of the Song of Songs, where the answers are still unclear,
focusing on the movement of the subject.
All the way to chapter 8...
Next time, verse 11.
