Job Chapter 8
Bildad begins to speak.
“Does God pervert justice?”
“If you are righteous, you will be restored.”
There is a reason for suffering.
It lies on the human side.
Righteousness is spoken clearly.
Bildad’s words are strong.
Right or not right.
He judges in either/or terms.
God is righteous.
Therefore, the outcome is also right.
This structure does not waver.
Yet Job’s reality
does not fit within this framework.
The clearer righteousness becomes,
the greater the distance
from his reality.
People seek what is right.
Because if they know what is right,
they believe they can feel at ease.
Yet righteousness
does not always sustain a person.
Job is still speaking.
He is speaking toward God.
Around him,
righteousness is being spoken.
Inside Job,
something begins to waver.
His response has not disappeared.
Yet its direction
is beginning to shift.
People try to remain
not only in explanation,
but also in what is right.
If they can hold an answer,
they believe they will not lose their way.
When righteousness is spoken,
where are you?
Do you remain
inside human righteousness?
Or do you turn back toward God,
and stand in the place
where awareness is given?
Bildad speaks righteousness.
Job stands
within that righteousness.
God has not yet spoken.
Righteousness makes things clear.
But God’s speaking
reveals where you stand.
