Pausing at Proverbs 10

“The proverbs of Solomon,

the son of David,

king of Israel.”

This is how the Book of Proverbs begins.

“My son…”

The call continues.

Listen.

Incline your heart.

Do not forsake instruction.

When we open chapter 10, the scenery changes.

Short sayings begin to appear,

almost like a collection of maxims.

The heading now reads:

“The proverbs of Solomon.”

This time, Solomon appears without his royal titles.

Before the readers who have been listening to a father's instruction,

new scenes unfold:

A son who brings joy to his father.

A son who brings grief to his mother.

The righteous.

The wicked.

The wise.

The foolish.

From Proverbs 10 onward,

the real-life experiences of people begin to come into view.

“A wise son makes a father glad,

but a foolish son is the grief of his mother.”

      (Proverbs 10:1)

A white cat sits quietly by a window, gazing out at the greenery beyond. The image evokes a moment of reflection before entering the world of Proverbs 10, where everyday life comes into view.
When we open Proverbs 10, the scenery changes.
